Burning Adventures

Hello everyone! I will be heading to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert at the end of this week :o

I'll be away for about 11 days and I'm both nervous and excited about my future experience!

The only thing that I'm expecting right now is a long travel time and a lot of dust ... and from what I'm hearing there was some rain so the dust is more clay than dust. But I expect there to be plenty in the time I'm there.

So what is burning man? Well its hard to describe because there are so many interpretations of it. It comes down to the experience you have while you are on the playa (a desert basin with no outlet which periodically fills with water to form a temporary lake).

You can find many pictures, stories, hype, a range of experiences, and all types of people and backgrounds who have something to share about what Burning Man is to them.

There are many videos and documentaries about individual experiences and many expectations of those who have never attended.

The 10 Principals of Burning Man are declared as the foundation of the event
  1. Radical Inclusion
  2. Gifting
  3. Decommodification
  4. Radical Self-reliance
  5. Radical Self-expression
  6. Communal Effort
  7. Civic Responsibility
  8. Leaving No Trace
  9. Participation
  10. Immediacy
I'm curious how these principals will be expressed, ignored, shared, or forgotten by the participants at the event.

With such a large group of people I'm doing what I can to expect nothing while enjoying whatever experience I have.

I'll be staying with Tango'd Up in Blues (TUIB) at Center Camp & 4:45 if you are attending this year. There should be some fun dance and music if that is what you are into!

*Update*

I think I'm mostly ready as far as supplies go! I've added a few pictures of what I'm bringing on the flight to Reno! Two checked bags and one backpack.

I can include my packing list if there is interest, there are about 70 or 80 different items in my bags. I'm hoping it is enough for me to survive for the week.

Relationship Anarchy

My initial approach to polyamory was as a fluid relationship style, which is defined by those who are involved. Each member has a say into what becomes of the connections within the relationships.

As polyamory picks up around us expectations and definitions are created. I struggle with these and feel telling someone "I'm polyamorous" is no longer opening a conversation, but a series of expectations and assumptions.

Through this struggle I found Relationship Anarchy. It is something I am still learning about. But I feel as if I connect with it. It speaks to me and how I connect with people and relationships more than monogamy or polyamory.

So what is it?

Relationship anarchy (abbreviated RA) is the practice of forming relationships that are not bound by rules aside from what the people involved mutually agree on. ... The term relationship anarchy was coined by Andie Nordgren, and is the topic of Swedish bachelor theses by Jacob Strandell and Ida Midnattssol.

I feel that has some elements of non-hierarchical polyamory, but it still in its essence is something different. I feel that those I find as friends hold a special place to me. People that I support, love, and appreciate. I find difficulty in setting a status or a ranking for anyone. I have some friends which I share more experiences with which in turn makes me feel more connected. But I struggle with titles. I don't feel that girlfriend, best friend, lover, partner, companion, or any title that I know can express the importance of each person. So for now, I settle with friend. Unable to clearly explain.

I do my best to approach each connection as something to grow without a set path or expectation. I want to give and be given the freedom to explore and nurture whatever comes. There feels like such a strong pull towards a "relationship escalator" that it is easy to lose focus or lose a friend during the ride.

I'm still struggling to understand and to learn. I want to be able to know and to share my views and feelings clearly, but that is still a work in progress.

Training Complete : PAX East

I made it to PAX East! Training is complete, I didn't get both costumes sorted out before the weekend, but I'm happy with how Knockout Lee Sin turned out! Thanks to GrrzMoore for sending the outfit, and my friend Lydia for some last moment alterations to get everything to fit!

So I'm still collecting photos of the the weekend. Personally I didn't take very many pictures. With the massive quantity of people, it felt like PAX was more about walking around and gaming rather than stopping people for pictures. I did get a few compliments which was encouraging.

I've posted the photos I have so far, but I hope to get some from my friend Dave who went to the event with me. He has been very supportive and provided much encouragement and insight while I was training. If you are interested in my pre-PAX mindset and goals [Check This Link Out], it was very much a challenge but I'm happy with the results. I intend on keeping up with the gym, just not 6 days a week. I'm hoping I retain my shape for a least a few months!

Now to provide some details into the end of training program! By cosplay day (March 10th) I had been tracking my meals and exercising for 103 days (with MyFitnessPal). Training 5-6 days a week with 2 push days, 2 pull days, and 2 core/cardio days. I tried to eat at least 2,200 calories a day and reduced my sodium the last month as well as carb cycling. Which I would not recommend to anyone for any longer than 4 weeks.

I had one cheat day, which was recommend to me by my trainer, to reset my body in a sense, there is an importance around cheat meals which I do not understand, and they depend on your overall goals. But I'm not a doctor. I can see how it can at least help the mental strain of eating clean for so long. With all of my dietary restrictions I found it difficult to grab any easy cheat meals, which works to my advantage in a way.

My body fat went from 19% on December 21st, 2016 to 9% on March 8th, 2017 (measured with a skin-fold caliper). I think a 10% cut in 3 months is pretty great! My weight started at 157 and ended up at 144. I managed to lose body fat while gaining muscle overall. Which, from what I've read and have heard, is one of the hardest things to do! It was a struggle the last month to maintain weight, my trainer and I were worried that if I lost any more weight I would lose muscle, which would make me look scrawny and unhealthy.

I hope to take my cosplay to DreamHack Austin (end of April 2017) as well as Colossalcon (June 2017). I'll see how well it can happen, if anything I think I could kick up my training for a month to tone up before each event. It was quite the mental and social drain, which I feel I can do but will need some time to recuperate before I subject myself to that again.

Overall PAX East was a great experience. I think I will attend another in the future, I'm not sure that I would cosplay for the event again, anime conventions are definitely more geared to the cosplay crowd.

Cosplay Challenge

Hello! I have decided a few things. First that I'll be attending quite a few gaming related events this year, its possible I'll be attending more gaming than dancing in 2017 the first event being Penny-Arcade Expo: East (PAX East). The last time I went was 2012! So its been about five years. The photo is from the free "Curse Gaming" party, which was hilarious. Open bar, hamburger sliders, french fries, and music with a bunch of nerds that couldn't dance. I was big into ballroom and swing at the time, so I was trying to unsuccessfully show off some moves.

This year however I'm heading back and I am getting myself ready to cosplay a couple characters!
  1. Knockout Lee Sin (League of Legends)
  2. Adult Aang (The Legend of Korra)
Initially I thought I would make myself a costume, but I sorted out rather quickly that I have no idea what I'm doing and would most likely end up with a few cardboard boxes on my head. So I've commissioned someone else to do it for me! GrrzMoore Cosplay has agreed to make the costumes to my measurements! So with that in place I'm focusing on getting the body for the event, I'm trying to get cosplay fit!

The primary reasons I decided on these characters, I enjoy the material they are in, they are bald, and have facial hair! All good things for me and the look I go for in my day to day life.

My journey started December 6th, I've been tracking calories on MyFitnessPal, tracking my body fat percentage using a skin-fold caliper and calculations from ScoobysWorkshop, and just started working with a personal trainer from EFS Personal Training (if you try them out tell them Moses sent you). I've been rather serious about getting fit! I decided to jump on personal training because I was getting to a plateau in my training and my employer offers a discount with this company, so it seemed like a great time to jump on!

This next section is a lot of numbers ... which has been the focus of the last month for me, I hope it isn't too painful to read through!

My first measurement of body fat on 12/21/2016 put me around 19.8%, in order to see abs (which is one of my goals) I need to get my body fat somewhere between 6-12%. It is a pretty wide range that depends on body type and the muscles underneath. However anything ab related comes down to diet and cardio. If I did the skin-fold caliper calculations correctly my body fat percentage is at 14%. The next month should be good since I'll be starting a stricter diet for my macros and more weighted exercises.

The diet and exercise I have prior to working with a personal trainer is 50% carbs, 20% fat, 30% protein.  I've been able to keep things fairly close. I'm also at a 25% calorie reduction (as calculated by Scoobys Calorie Counter), I'm trying to make sure I get enough food day to day. Five days a week I've been doing 45 minutes of cardio (with a 150-155 heart rate), 40 push ups, two sets of Scooby's Rotisseries, and then twice a week I do 40 pull-ups. Its been good and I can feel progress, so that has been rewarding.

On December 6th I weighed 160 lbs and today January 17th I'm at 152 lbs. So over a month I've lost 8 lbs and have gained about 2.7 lbs of muscle. I'm guessing I'll need to increase my calories if I'm going to be gaining any more muscle mass. I don't have a weight in mind, just a visual goal, so I'm OK with the numbers fluctuating.

That was the number dump portion! I'll have some before and after photos at the end of my training, I don't have great lighting but hopefully the transformation is obvious!

Thanks for reading and I'm looking forward to sharing the end result!

*Update 1/18/2017* My body-fat measurement came out to 14% this morning! Some progress!

Here is a picture to show 2010 compared to today :)

#Thornwatch Poem

Hope is lost
my village burning
my ribs broken
I've ran to the wood
quickly, a knot tied around the birch
collapsing, tears and blood my offering
I pray the demons do not rise

Gamer

So those of you reading should know that I'm a gamer. While I dabble with board games, console games, and role playing games, I primarily fall under the category of PC gamer.

My primary games have been League of Legends (LoL), Hearthstone, and more recently Counter Strike:Global Offensive (CS:GO).

I set myself some goals this season and its been a fun and frustrating journey.

So what are these goals?

  • Gold in LoL
  • Gold in CS:GO
  • Legend in Hearthstone
Doesn't seem too crazy right?

Well here is a brief breakdown of each game.

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/League_system
There are 8 tiers in LoL; Unranked, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Challenger.

The game starts in Unranked with a summoner level of 0. You play games to gain experience and reach a level of 30. Once you reach level 30 you can start competitive matches. Each season you start by playing 10 games to get placed into a division. Once you get placed there are 5 Divisions within each tier. You generally start in division 5 and gain points from winning games in that division.

You can receive anywhere from 1 point to 23 points per win. While it is rare to gain less than 15 points the algorithm is complicated and it does happen. Once you receive 100 points you start your series to advance. In tiers five through two you need to win 2/3 games to advance to the next division. Once you reach division one you will need to win 3/5 games to advance to the next tier.

Currently 19.40% of active players are currently ranked Gold. 9.65% of players are ranked higher than Gold. I'm happy to have made it to Gold! I was placed into Silver 1 and played over 300 games moving frequently between the divisions to rank up. Each game can last from 20 to 60+ minutes. One of the hardest parts of the game is consistency. If you have good team communication and team synergy things go very well. In the lower tiers of Silver and Gold there are less mechanics and more anger to deal with. If you can make your teammates feel good you have a better chance of winning, even if you are behind.

This was a challenging and mentally straining adventure. I had a lot of support from my friend Dave, he talked with me about the current meta, game changes, and helped me to develop my skills in the game.

In my ranked journey I got really good at demoting from Silver 1 into Silver 2 and then winning a bunch of games to advance back into Silver 1. I got my series from Silver 1 to Gold 5 eight times. The way the ranking system is structured players in Gold 5 have a skill range from low Silver to low Gold. This makes constancy non-existent and frustrations amplify more than ever. The last game of my series was a combination of good plays and begging and pleading with my team to complete objectives and finish the game. We were very much ahead but my team was more interested in griefing the enemy than they were in finishing.

While competitive game play has been a part of the Counter Strike series for many years it was tracked by third party websites and you had to join a league in order to get any sort of ranking or collaborative game play. I remember playing in a team in the Cyberathlete Amateur League (CAL) in the open division. We didn't advance at all, but it was a fun experience.

With the development of Steam and more interest in casual competitive game play a new ranking system was created for CS:GO.

A competitive match of CS has 10 players and two possible teams T and CT. You play as each team for 15 rounds. Each round is two minutes with the objective of eliminating the enemy team or destroying or defending a location specified on the map.

There are 18 rankings broken up into three main tiers: Silver, Gold Nova, Elite. The actual naming convention can get a little strange, but they display like badges.

You start the game at level 0, in order to play competitively you need to reach level 3. In order to get placed into a division you need to win 10 ranked games. This means you can play any number of games, but you need to win 10 in order to receive a placement. While this in itself seems reasonable, there is a limit of two ranked wins while you are in this Unranked limbo. Once you get two wins a 23 hour cooldown begins. So best case it will take 5 days of games before you are ranked.

I was happy to play with my brother Noah and his friends. He has a current ranking of Gold Nova Master. So while I played with him I was against other players in that tier of play. While it was challenging, as I became more familiar with the maps and the habits of other players my confidence in the game increased.

After getting my 10 ranked wins I was placed into Silver Elite. At the time of placement I was no longer able to play with Noah's friends because they was too much of a gap in ranking for the game restrictions. If we had a full team of 5 players it would allow us to play, but we did not always have 5 players. So I played several games alone or with my brother as a duo. After 6 wins I advanced to Gold Nova 1! The movement was much quicker than I expected, but CS is not a new game for me, so I had past experience and the guidance of my bro to get me ranked quickly! I intend to play some more games with my bro and see how far I can rank.

Here is my current adventure! Hearthstone is a virtual trading card game (TCG) developed by Blizzard. There are 25 possible ranks in Hearthstone. Once you receive 6 wins in rank 1 you reach the "Legend" rank which give you your exact ranking in the region. this game has quite a bit to do with reading your opponent, and playing a tremendous amount of games and having, even if every so slightly, a win rate of over 50%.

There are several websites which provide a optimized set of cards (each deck has 30) which synergies well with each other and counters the most commonly played decks. The issue with this is that everyone uses these websites and copies the cards that professional players use. The best way to counter this is to be aware of what deck your opponent is using and to play knowing the potential next move.

If you are able to read your opponent and make a fewer number of mistakes you have a pretty good chance of winning!

Once you reach rank 5 you need to win 25 games in order to reach Legend status. This can be very frustrating and overwhelming. My current rank is 4 but I expect this to fluctuate greatly until I reach the top. This season is set to end on June 30th, once that happens I'll start from the bottom again!

A post from September last year a Blizzard shared some stats which showed that only 2% of players reached ranks 1-5. So that is an achievement at least!

Once again I must give props to my friend Dave. He has been keeping me up to date with the current meta and has helped me to craft decks and see options in the game play that I might miss or forget about. He has been a great support for me!

Well I'll continue to climb to reach my goal ... and after that? Well maybe I'll go outside or something.

* Update *

So I don't think I'm going to make it to legend this season, while I intend to try, I'll see what I can do next month.

I did however reach 500 wins on my hunter today :D

For that you get a "Golden Hunter Portrait"
Which looks cool at least! You get a moving portrait and some glowy graphics ... you could say that was a golden achievement *rim-shot*

The climb to Legend has been challenging though, much of the same going on in the ladder. The same optimal decks on popular deck building websites run amok between 5 and the top ranking. There is a good quantity of luck and just knowing what the other player has to work with. Every once in a while I see a deck that makes me scratch my head, 80% of the time they lose because of the non-optimal cost of varying from the meta unfortunately. But I'm happy with another win closer to Legend.

In other Hearthstone news, there has been the announcement of the Hearthstone Grand Tournament!

This is a release of another expansion of the game. This means a 132 new cards to collect, find synergy with, and become angry about. At least they keep things interesting! I intend to save up my in-game currency and spend minimal amount of real dollars on the expansion, but we will see how things go. I have about 1000 gold saved up, which will buy me 10 packs when it gets released.

DJ Awesomeness

I just got back from an amazing weekend at Steel City Blues 2014 in Pittsburgh, PA. There was awesome dancing, DJs, artists, workshops, and so many cuddles and awesome connections made.

I was fortunate enough to make it to a DJ workshop taught by Daniel Repsch who is not only an awesome DJ but an amazing dancer and instructor. He motivated me to step my DJ game and adventure up.

So last night I spent several hours looking for a DJ program that I could use and be happy with for my future DJ adventures. I looked at MusicBee, AudioMulch, AIMP, MediaMonkey, Foobar2000, and Mixxx. I read reviews on forums, lifehacker, and wherever else I could find them. I was ready to drop some bank on a program, an external sound card, and even a new laptop if necessary!

With all that in mind, I want to express how excited I am for a free DJ program!

I have been using Mixxx 1.10 for a few months now, and while the experience has been "good" it was leaving me disappointed.

I'm super happy to see that they have released v1.11.0 and it has everything I was wanting and more!

Here are some of the features that make it awesome:

Cool design:
It has all the switches, bells, and whistles that you could want making it look like you have a million things going on! I like the default black option, it won't kill your eyes or kill the mood when the lights are turned down low :)

Multiple volume and balance dials, sync options, a fade control, individual volume, headphone listening switch, BPM identifier, lets you know if a song was played, read and sort the comments of your songs!

And that is just on the main screen!

There are lots of other great additions!

Auto DJ:
It was alright before, but it didn't work for social dancing ... now they added a fade delay option! So I can set a transition time before a song ends (positive numbers) or after a song has finished (negative numbers). This is one of the features I was most excited for! The songs that you have played automatically leave the "auto dj" section (don't worry they are marked as "played" and are saved in history!

Here are some other awesome tools that are much needed!

Music Crates:
Crates are great for organizing music to DJ, avoid, or play more of!

History:
Don't worry about trying to remember what you played for a set, each time you open the program a new history item is started!

Easy Audio Output Options:
I found this to be awesome for setting my computer for multiple outputs without an external sound card!

Song Preview:
Just click a little play button and music is automatically sent to your secondary output! (make sure you have a secondary output before you click it!)

I use the UCA 222 (less than $20!)
https://a.co/d/1MPople

Another way to preview a loaded track is to move the fader to the other side while playing with the headphone option selected ... CAUTION ... if the fader isn't all the way over the other song will play through the speakers!

Where it falls short: (this list will grow as I figure out what doesn't work :p)
  • No massive update options for comments or album or other bulk things you might want to do.
  • Comments do not save to the music file itself (they are worried about corrupting the file if they do) so if you make comments and then reload meta-data your comments can (and probably will clear out)
    • I might play around with MusicBee to update comments
    • I have been happily using MusicBee, this is a great program for categorizing and general listening to music.
  • BPM Detection, it doesn't work super well, but I'm happy to see it when it does work.
  • Window size; the available sizes are big or bigger. Not a big deal when I'm spinning, I won't be opening other programs.
/
I'm looking forward to more DJ adventures and finding out more about Mixxx and it's features. If you have any questions, great features, or major failure, please let me know!

Updates Below!

4/27/2014:
So as I've been tinkering with Mixxx I've had an "oh crap" moment.

Do NOT set the "Master" output as "Primary Sound Driver"

It is best to assign the device for each output rather than letting the system decide for you :)

I had the issue of plugging in my USB headset and the laptop identifying it as the Primary ... which means no music though the speakers! It took me a few seconds to figure out what happened, but when people are expecting music to start and you are fiddling around with the controls it makes for bad times :(

There has also been one instance of my music history not saving ... that was during one of my fights with the machine at a house party :/ so while I wasn't too upset over loosing the set list, it was still a crappy feeling.

While this isn't exactly a program limitation, it is fairly important to know!

If I do figure out what causes the history to trip out I will update it here!

9/26/2015:
Worried about system sounds?

If you set your usb device as the primary sound device to what you aren't using to play your music (the USB Headset for me) it will force the system to play system sounds through that device :D

11/07/2018:
More updates have come through! The interface has been redesigned and scales better. There have also been improvements made to the BPM & Key Detection feature.
